Losing your dog can be a nerve-wracking experience. Furthermore, witnessing the mistreatment of a dog, or finding a dog that seems lost or aggressive can also be upsetting.

This is why Leeds City Council provide a dog warden service.

How to Report a Lost Dog

You should use the Report a Lost Dog form if you've lost your dog.

LCC will contact you if they find a dog that matches the description provided by you.

If you think that someone has handed in your dog, please contact Woodhaven Boarding Kennels and Cattery or other local kennels.

You can also contact the Dogs Trust, or vets in the area where your dog went missing.

However, in some circumstances, you may need to check the Dead Cats and Dogs Register page to see if your pet has been picked up.

The page is updated regularly, as such if there aren't any recent updates they haven't had any deceased animals during that time.

Please be aware that LCC will scan any deceased pet for a chip if possible. If a microchip can be seen, LCC will list the number in the register.

How LCC Deal With Found Dogs

Our dog wardens will collect the dog and bring it to a kennel with which we have an agreement. The dog will stay there for seven days. The kennel will be responsible for the dog after seven days.

They are open Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 4:30pm. They may not be available to pick up a dog the next day if it is a busy period.

You can use the Report a Found Dog form to report a lost dog.

You can also take your dog to the vet to check if it has an ID chip. The owner's details will be on the chip. Make sure the dog cannot escape. If possible, the dog will require water and food.

We are closed on weekends, bank holidays and evenings. You can bring a dog you found during these hours to Woodhaven Boarding Kennels and Cattery.

What LCC Do With Dangerous Dogs

The law prohibits dangerously out-of-control dogs in public areas, on private property, such as gardens, and at the home of the owner.

All dog breeds are covered by the law. It is not necessary for them to bite or to be one of the banned breeds in order to be considered dangerous.

A dog can be dangerously out of control if:

  • Injures someone

  • Makes someone afraid that they might be injured

If it's an emergency, you can call the Police at 999 or 101 to report a dog that is dangerous.

You can also contact us via the Form to report a problem with your dog.

This form can be used to inform us if you see a dog that is out of control, causes damage to the park or other animals, or is prone to straying.

Banned Dog Breeds

If you suspect that a dog is of a prohibited breed, call the Police at 101.

These are the Pit Bull Terrier in the UK, the Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and the Fila Brasileiro. It is illegal to cross-breed any of these types, based on their size and characteristics.

Nuisance Barking

To report nuisance dog barking, visit our antisocial behaviour page.

If You Suspect A Dog Is A Stray

Please use the Stray Dog Form to report an animal that you suspect is a stray.

Dead, Sick or Injured Dogs Procedure

Report any sick or injured stray animals to the RSPCA. You can report stray dogs via the RSPCA's website or by calling them at 0300 1234999.

You can report dead dogs to us using the Report a Dead Animal online form.
