Leeds dog home plays a crucial role in providing care for stray, injured, and unwanted dogs in the area. It serves as a safe haven for these animals in need of love and attention.

Leeds Dog Trust

Since 1891 The Dog Trust in Leeds have been fighting for a better tomorrow for dogs and their owners.

They care for dogs in distress and find a loving home for a dog who needs one. The Leeds Dog Trust is ready to help when an owner needs a helping paw (or hand) or just cannot cope.

They are by the side of every dog and every owner through thick, thin, and all stages of their life. The Leeds Dog Trust treasure the bond that they share. It makes each day more enjoyable and complete.

Dog Care

They have 64 kennels that can accommodate up to 80 dogs. There is a vet's suite, a training barn, a large field for exercise, and puppy blocks.

While in their care, they will either place the dog in one of their rehoming centres, where they will be cared for by a team of experts, or in an approved foster home.

Leeds Dog Trust provide everything dogs need to get on their feet while we search for their forever homes.

Prospective adopters are carefully screened to ensure that each dog gets the perfect home.

In the year 2023, they helped 653 dogs to find loving homes.

Specialist Treatment For Dogs

Dogs are taken into care for a variety of reasons. Each dog has a unique personality and set of requirements.

The Leeds Dog Home will take the time to get to know each dog and provide them with the support they require. Their rehoming centres are equipped with specialist facilities that provide the best care for dogs.

They have behaviour and training experts who will evaluate each dog to develop a plan for enrichment, training and care.

We go the extra distance to build confidence and skills in dogs that need extra support. This could include introducing the dog to new activities or building their confidence with unfamiliar people.

All dogs will be regularly examined and treated by the dedicated veterinary team. Each centre is equipped with dedicated vet suites and even hydrotherapy tanks that are run by hydrotherapists.

Some dogs may need extra vet care to monitor or investigate a condition.

Care For As Long As It Takes

Dogs stay with the centre for 47 days on average before they are adopted, but some dogs require more attention and care before they can find a forever home.

The dogs are taken care of for as long as it takes until they are re-homed.

The Adoption Process

The new rehoming program allows you to submit a single application and they will do all the work of finding the perfect dog for you.

You will be asked to provide information about your lifestyle and home. The team then search for the perfect dog for you. You will not be applying for any specific dog but you can inform them to see what kind of dog you are looking for.

Your application will be kept open for three full months while they review all of the dogs in your centre.

They will actively search for a dog to match with you during the next three months. You will be informed if they can't match you with a dog within the next three months and invite you to apply again.

The website does not feature all dogs available. Even if you don't see a dog you like on the site, it is recommended that you submit an adoption application.

Once Matched

You will invite you to meet the dog at the rehoming center if it seems like a good match for you.

Some dogs will have to meet with potential owners more than once to get to understand each other.

This allows the rehoming team to see if you are compatible, and it gives you a chance to form a bond with the dog before committing to their adoption. Adoptions are more successful when everyone is comfortable at the start.

The team will also visit your home to check the security of your garden and how it is set up. It may not be required, however, if you have adopted a dog before. They may accept a vet's reference if you have already adopted dogs.

Ongoing Support

The Dogs Home will help you to welcome your dog into your home once you have been matched.

Adopting a dog is the beginning of a journey that will be exciting for both you and your dog. There will be bumps along the way as you and your dog set off together.

Your dog may bark at other dogs. You might need to help them sleep at night or continue their training.

The post-adoption assistance is available to you, no matter what the challenges.

Over the phone, they'll provide you with expert advice on behaviour and training to support you and your loyal friend. They will be there for you and your dog for its entire life.

You will remain in contact after adoption to check on both the dog and yourself. There will always be advice or support available if required.

Communication

The rehoming team will call the adopters two days after the adoption to see how you and your new dog are doing. You'll be contacted again in two weeks and four months after adoption.

It is recommended you accept the extra support even though it is optional. This will allow the team to help with any new or ongoing settlement queries.

It will help to reduce the likelihood of problems arising. Do not hesitate to contact them with any problems, no matter how big or small.

They'll call to make sure everything is going smoothly. We will ask you questions about the health of your dog and their behaviour in their new home.

You will be referred to the expert team of the behaviour department for advice. It can take up to 5 days, as they are always helping owners. They'll get back to you as soon as possible to discuss the situation and offer help.

You can request to speak with the team of dog behaviour experts if you need to discuss a problem in more detail. Or, the customer service centre will do it for you. You will be informed when a behaviourist can call you.

A behaviourist will call you and listen to what you have experienced so far.

They may also ask some additional questions to ensure they understand your situation. Then, together with you, they will create a plan that is tailored to your situation and the needs of both you and your dog.
